Message From the Principal

                                                                                                October 1, 2008

Dear Parents,

The beautiful month of October in upon us and we have settled in to what we hope will be a fabulous year of learning.  We are looking forward to partnering with you to make this a year of outstanding achievement for all of our students.

We enjoyed meeting so many parents at “Meet the Teachers Night”. It was great to have the opportunity to share curriculum, expectations, policies, and our vision for a successful year.  Our teachers will continue to send out newsletters, emails, and other communications to help keep you informed as to what is happening in their classrooms. We are working on getting all teacher websites up and running. It’s a great way to share all the exciting learning and activities going on in our school.

Miss Barbara Ryan.

Students in grades 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7 will be taking part in standardized testing next week.  These tests do not require preparation or study but are designed to give insight into each student’s ability and achievement. You will receive a profile of your child’s performance on these tests in the fall.

During October our youngest students will be involved in learning activities that will take them outside the classroom.  On October 6th and 8th, our pre-k, transitional, kindergarten, and grade one children will be visiting the Vigilant Fire Hall to learn about fire prevention and safety. On October 28th, pre-k, tk, and kindergarten will spend the morning at Zittel’s Farm.

The week of October 20th has been designated “Red Ribbon Week”.  We will be focusing on the dangers of using drugs and alcohol.  Mrs. Devine, Mrs. Schieber, Ms. Bartnicki and Ms. Martina are planning many activities for the week to educate our students and proclaim this message.  As part of the “Red Ribbon Week” celebration, our sixth graders will be attending a day-long assembly program at Fourteen Holy Helpers School.  During this week we will also be highlighting fitness and making healthy choices.  We will have a “health tip of the day” and a walkathon to support the “Miles for Madison” program.  Through the generosity of this foundation, our school was given a defibrillator to use in case of a medical emergency. More information will be coming home about this event shortly.

Don’t forget about the Spaghetti Dinner sponsored by our Sports Committee that will be held on Wednesday, October 22nd from 4:30pm to 7:00pm and catered by the Olive Garden.  Takeouts are available. The cost is $8.00 adults/ $5.00 children 13 and under.  This annual event helps to pay for league fees for tournament fees, uniforms, and equipment for our teams.  Your support is appreciated by all of our athletes and coaches.

Representatives from ID4kids will be here on Wednesday, October 15th to take pictures and create an identification card for all those interested.  More information will be sent home next week.

Our pre-school children will have their school pictures taken on Friday, October 17th.  Also, any student who would like a picture re-take may have it done on this day.

We will be again offering a flu/pneumonia shot clinic for anyone interested on Tuesday, October 21st from 9:00am to 1:00pm in the Parish Center.   The cost is covered by most insurance plans.

Our Home School Guild will sponsor a Halloween Party for Q of H students on Friday, October 24th from 6:30 to 8:30 pm in the gym. All are invited to join us for a great evening of fun.  Please send a bag of candy to school if you plan on attending.

Are you in need of health coverage for your children?  Fidelis Care is a no-cost program available to all New York State residents that provides free health care for children and teens.  If you need information about the program, please contact the school office.

The school districts will be conducting a Bus Emergency Drill on Friday, October 3rd.  This means that dismissal will take place 15 minutes earlier on that day, at 2:15pm.  Please be sure that you make any arrangements necessary for this early dismissal.

Thank you to all parents, teachers, and friends who are supporting Queen of Heaven through Target’s “Take Charge of Education” program.  We received a check this week for $257 which represents 1% of purchases made using the Target credit card listing our school as the designated recipient.  Anyone who would like to help with this effort can visit www.Target.com or call 1-800-316-6142.  Please publicize this program among your family and friends.

Two important reminders: Now that October has arrived, shorts no longer may be worn as part of our school uniform. Please refer to our handbook for all uniform policies.  Also, we will be observing Columbus Day on Monday, October 13th and Friday, October 10th is a Diocesan Conference Day. There will be no school on these days.

May you enjoy all the splendors of autumn!

  Sincerely,

Barbara A. Ryan
