March 2012

Dear Parents,

We have begun our Lenten journey. With the cross of ashes we received on Ash Wednesday, we are challenged to strengthen our relationship with God through prayer and good works. We encourage you to discuss with your children the many ways that they can make this Lenten season one of spiritual growth. Students in grades 3 through 8 will have the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation during the month of March and we will be gathering for the Stations of the Cross at 1:15 on Wednesday, March 28. All of these experiences will hopefully help prepare our school community for the passion, death and resurrection of the Lord.

The next five weeks will be a busy time here at Queen of Heaven as students concentrate on their third quarter studies. The third quarter marking period will end on March 30. Report cards will be distributed after we return from Easter recess.

March will start off with our Book Fair and Ice Cream Social. The Book Fair will take place from March 7 through March 9. The children will have the opportunity to visit the fair each day to browse and to purchase books, posters and other items. The Ice Cream Social will be held on Friday, March 9 from 6:00 to 8:00. There will also be a fish fry on that evening beginning at 4:30, sponsored by our 8th grade students as a fundraiser for their trip to New York City. They would be grateful for your support.

Our Open House went very well as we introduced twenty new families to our school. Many have already registered, hopeful of winning the $500 tuition voucher that was available for new students. Thank you to the many parents, teachers, students, and alumni who assisted with this important event.

Re-registration is also going well and will be continuing during the month of March. To give our current school parents the same opportunity as new families and win a $500 tuition voucher, we will have a drawing before Easter that will include all families who have completed registration by March 30. This will help us with our budget planning for next year. Also, we will be sending in the bus transportation forms to the public school districts at that time. If we have not received your form by March 30, you will need to take care of your transportation request for next year directly with the district.

The school office has BISON Fund applications available. Awards are based on need documented by confidential financial information. The deadline for applying for these programs is April 30. These forms can be downloaded from www.qofhschool.org.

All are invited to our Art Show and Science Fair on Friday, March 30 from 4:00 to 7:00. Wonderful student work will be on display in the cafeteria and church hall.

We ask God’s blessing on our 2nd grade students who have been preparing to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This will take place on Tuesday, March 27.

Other special programs for March include workshop sessions from Catholic Charities focusing on conflict resolution skills for grade 5 and an anti-smoking Tar Wars presentation for grades 4 and 5.

Don’t forget that our Casino and Sweepstakes Night is coming up on March 24. All families are required to sell/purchase six sweepstakes tickets and many volunteers are needed to make this event a success. We are also in need of raffle baskets, gift cards, and bottles of cheer. Please do what you can to make this a fun and profitable evening for our school. If you need more information, please call the school office.

As a result of our Catholic Schools Week Fun Day, our school will be able to make a generous donation to Catholic Charities again this year. Thank you for your support of this important endeavor.

Recently we received this cycle’s check from the United Way which reflects contributions made by parents, grandparents, parishioners and friends of Queen of Heaven School. If you contribute to the United Way at your workplace, an easy way to support our educational mission is by designating Q of H as a recipient of your United Way gift. Please consider helping us through this program if you are able.

Please be aware that Friday, March 16 will be a professional development day for our teachers. There will be no school for students on that day.

May God bless you and keep you in His care.

Sincerely,

Barbara A. Ryan
Principal
