Eighth grade art classes at Queen of Heaven School earned an Honorable Mention from the Albright Knox Art Gallery in the Art's Cool Art Inspired Competition. Kari Achatz's students learned about Surrealist artists such as Salvador Dali, who tapped dreams and the subconscious for their imagery. After discussing the ways in which images can either compliment or contradict each other, students created works of art in which their own mixed-media version of a famous artwork was juxtaposed with a found photograph. The honorable Mention came with an award of $250 which will benefit the art program at Queen of Heaven School. This is the second year in a row the eighth grade class has placed in this competition under the direction of Kari Achatz.

Over the past few weeks, the students of Mrs. Bloom’s after school computer club worked diligently on a video for the MathMovesU “Build it Better” STEM contest. In this video the students had to articulate a problem that the school presently has and present a way to make it better using either math or science and technology as an application.
Earlier this year it was announced that 10 Catholic Elementary Schools will be closing their doors. Queen of Heaven quickly embraced the new faces of the surrounding closing schools, and in return has nearly doubled the student body for the 2014-2015 school year. With that in mind, our “head engineers” went to work configuring the cafeteria floor plan to accommodate the growing student population.
With their hard work and efforts, the video made the finalist round on the MathMovesU Facebook page! You can view the video with a Like of the MathMovesU Facebook page: http://bit.ly/1mgUAyf

The Seventh Grade Students in Religion class learned about how the Catholic Church is a “melting pot” made up of so many nationalities. What unites us in our faith is Eucharist. As part of sharing our faith through our customs and traditions, Ms. Martina shared her custom and had a traditional St. Joseph Table to honor St. Joseph on March 19th. As part of the tradition, students also made St. Joseph Altars. It all started in Sicily, and agriculture was important to the island. There had been no rain, and their fields turned to dust. The only thing that thrived was the fava bean, which is now called the “lucky bean.” The people prayed and pleaded with St. Joseph, their patron. Finally the skies opened up, sending life giving water. To show their gratitude, they prepared a table with the foods they had harvested. After paying honor to st. Joseph, they distributed the food among the poor. The Seventh Grade students had a wonderful celebration in remembrance of the feast of St. Joseph. The feast is both a source of petition, and thanksgiving. It is believed that having a St. Joseph Altar can bring good fortune.
